Dragonfly Preschool is a preschool in a sunny home in Northeast Portland in the Irvington neighborhood. We have a nurturing learning community where each child's unique abilities and interests are valued and supported. Through a play based curriculum we help each child become a confident, joyful, lifelong learner. Our days are filled with art, music, dramatic play, dance, and nature. Our schedule includes ample time for free play, as it promotes friendship, problem solving, and discovery of the world. Our structure allows for flexibility to develop according to children's interests and passions. Dragonfly Preschool teaches a love for learning and wonder for life's experiences.
Our curriculum is based on the latest research in early childhood development. We provide a play-based learning environment that allows children to explore and learn at the own pace. Our program includes literacy, math, science, art, music, and movement. Our themes last as long as students are engaged and excited. Each day brings new opportunities for learning. Some past favorite themes include space, oceans, bugs, and red pandas.
We value the individuality of every child. Our mixed aged classroom of ages 2.5-5 years old allows for each child to learn at their own pace. We encourage the ripping of paper, getting paint on our hands, and squishing play dough. Our art projects are about the process and exploring materials. Song, dance, music, stories, and movement at circle time create community and laughter. We have fun!
Our teachers are dedicated, compassionate, and consistent. We communicate with each other and our families to meet each student's needs and together we create a safe and welcoming learning community. Each day has a new experience while maintaining the consistency and structure many children need.
Dragonfly Preschool values and celebrates all races, religions, ethnic origins, and family compositions.
At Dragonfly Preschool we believe that every child is unique and learns in their own way and at their own pace. Our curriculum is designed to foster a love of learning and a sense of curiosity in our young students. We create a nurturing and supportive environment that encourages children to explore and discover the world around them.
Dragonfly Preschool has a mixed-aged classroom of 13 students, aged 2.5 to 5 years old, and two teachers. This ratio allows for us to meet each child's individual learning goals. Children may still be wearing diapers and we assist in the transition to toilet use.
Our school day begins at 9am and ends at 1pm. Families choose their schedule of two to five days a week. Children bring snack and lunch from home to allow for individual dietary preferences and needs.
Tuition is divided into ten equal payments regardless of missed days due to illness, vacations or holidays. We follow Portland Public Schools for vacations and some holidays. A non-refundable annual enrollment and supply fee of $250 and one month's tuition is due at the time of enrollment. Enrollment ranges from $550-$1050 each month depending on the number of days per week.
In 2025, 100% of our students were fully vaccinated.
An example of our daily activities:
9:00-10:00 – Arrival and Free Play Children say goodbye to parents, greet their friends and teachers and choose an activity. Free play includes dramatic play, art, building activities, and sensory fun (play dough, sand, water, etc). The days’ activities will change according to the theme currently being explored and children’s interest.
10:00-10:20 – Clean up and Circle Time
Our morning circle time includes music, movement, books, and learning activities relevant to our theme.
10:20-11:00 – Snack Time and Books, Building, and Puzzles
During snack we share stories, read books, and create community. When children are done with snack, they choose an activity while taking turns using the bathroom.
11: 00-11:45 Outside Time Children enjoy time in our fenced-in backyard play area. We garden, dig, run, and play with friends. In extreme weather, our outside play will be supplemented by other gross motor activities including dancing, obstacle courses, and playing with our parachute.
11:45-12:30 – Lunch and Show and Tell During lunchtime we have Show and Tell, conversations including questions to encourage sharing, and story time.
12:30-1:00 – Afternoon Activity Our afternoon activity is our time for finishing projects, writing, and drawing as we transition to going home.
1:00 - Goodbyes Children say goodbye to their friends and teachers.
